Kepinol/ Bactrim
"Kepinol" is an antibiotic for children. It is used to treat hares prophylactically against Kokzidiose
and is well-tried in fostering hares. As the manufacturer of Kepinol (Dr.R. Pfleger GmbH, D-96045 Bamberg)
informed us, the medicine is only available in Germany. A substitute, which is very well-tried in Austria,
is named Eusaprim. But since Eusaprim is also not available everywhere, you can use antibiotics that contain
the ingredients Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim (also named Co-trimoxazole). An employee of Dr.R. Pfleger
GmbH kindly sent us a copy of "Martindale, The complete drug reference, 3rd Edition, 2002" where several
other medicines with these ingredients are listed: Bactrim, Cotrim, Bacin, Apo-Sulfatrim, Sulfatrim,
Bridotrim, Eduprim, Trimol, Fectrim, Chemotrim. Please note that these medicines are only available
on prescription!

Thilocanfol ointment for the eyes
Children as well as hares can suffer from a bunged tear duct. The tear duct connects the eye socket
with the throat and allows the lacrymal liquid to drain off. A bunged tear duct causes an infection
of the eye that needs to be treated, in the case of our first hare we treated it with Thilocanfol.
Normally the tear duct opens when the skull grows but sometimes it may be necessary to douche it,
that should be made by a vet!
Manufcturer: Dr. Thilo & Co. GmbH
Ingredients: Chloramphenicol
Dosage: when required bring in one portion of ointment of the size of a pinhead into the front ankle
of the eye (max. two times per day)

At the vet
Our vet treated our first hare with Luminal, a medicine to counteract the effects of a shock or
cerebral concussion. The hare was very quiet, almost apathetic, for two days but it was still capable
of eating and its condition increased afterwards. Please contact your vet if the hare suffers from a
severe illness.
